Impacto! #156 – Entrevista a Rob Schamberger

O Impacto! regressa este mês e já com novas ideias para a dinâmica deste espaço. Ao longo dos últimos meses fiz uma reflexão sobre as mudanças que aconteceram no Wrestling.PT e sobre qual o papel deste espaço no crescimento do site. Se é verdade que o Impacto! já se distingue na multidão por ser a única secção regular dedicada à TNA, penso que este ano era importante traçar novos caminhos. Deste modo, e depois de falar com o Luís Salvador, decidi reformular o Impacto!.

A principal pergunta que fiz a mim próprio foi de que forma eu poderia trazer algo à comunidade de visitantes que se reunem no WPT, que fosse realmente uma mais-valia. Dado o meu percurso, decidi que o Impacto! será um espaço, embora focado na TNA e no circuito independente, trará algo que nenhum outro site em Lingua Portuguesa conseguiu produzir – o contacto directo com os protagonistas desta indústria que tanto nos entusiasma. Assim, regularmente irei trazer entrevistas exclusivas com várias personalidades do wrestling, com foco na TNA, mas prometo fazer todos os esforços para chegar à conversa com nomes de outras promoções, incluindo a WWE.

Esta semana, trago-vos a entrevista que fiz a Rob Schamberger. Para quem não o conhece, o Rob é um artista brilhante que já foi aclamado pela revista Forbes como um dos melhores no mundo da arte, com trabalhos publicados na Sports Illustrated, USA Today, E! News e no AskMen. Alguns dos seus quadros estão em exposição permanente no National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum, onde Rob é o seu artista oficial. Os seus quadros fazem também parte do espólio da WWE, estando expostos na sede da organização. Aliás, Rob trabalha para a WWE, tendo algumas obras à venda na loja online WWE Shop. Alguns dos seus trabalhos mais conceitados incluem posters para a Wrestlemania e o SummerSlam.

Olá Rob, Vou pedir-te uma breve introdução, quem é Rob Schamberger?
Hi Rob, I’m going to ask you for a short introduction, who is Rob Schamberger?

Sou um artista que vive no Kansas City, MO, EUA, alegremente casado e tenho dois adoráveis gatos. Sou um artista profissional há 18 anos, mas nos últimos 4-5 anos tornei-me muito conhecido graças aos meus retratos de wrestlers profissionais.
I’m an artist living in Kansas City, MO, USA, happily married and with two lovely cats. I’ve been a professional artist for 18 years, but over the last 4-5 years I have become very well-known for my portraits of professional wrestlers.

Antes de falarmos de wrestling, deixa-me começar por te perguntar como te interessante por arte? Como descobriste e alimentaste essa veia criativa?
– Before getting into wrestling, let me start by asking how did you become interested in art? How did you discovered and nurtured your creative vein?

Eu tinha sete anos de idade e o meu irmão mais velho comprou-me uma cópia do Incredible Hulk, que passámos o fim-de-semana a redesenhar. Eu soube logo ali que queria ser um artista. Durante muito tempo eu tentei ser um ilustrador de livros de banda-desenhada, mas há alguns ano descobri que teria mais sucesso no mundo das artes mais finas.
I was seven years old and my older step-brother bought me a copy of The Incredible Hulk, which we spent the weekend redrawing. I knew right then that I wanted to be an artist. For a long time I tried to be a comic book artist, but a few years ago I found quite a bit more success in the fine art world.

Numa pergunta mais ampla e espero que a minha ideia seja clara para ti, gostava de ter a tua visão como artista. Arte e cultura são duas áreas consideradas como menos importantes, especialmente quando se fala em economia. No nosso site – Wrestling.pt – a maioria dos leitores reside em Portugal e no Brasil, dois países que estão sob a ameaça de cortes orçamentais e, a cultura e arte são as primeiras áreas a sofrer. Para ti como artista, pode a arte ter um impacto na economia dos países ou o valor da arte não pode ser medido por valores económicos? Também pergunto isto, sabendo que tens projetos que foram suportados por plataformas sociais de angariação de fundos como a Kickstarter. Será que a arte pode ser guiada pelo lucro? Não sei se fui claro…
– In a broader question and i hope i can explain this idea clearly, I want to get your vision as an artist. Art and culture are two areas that often are considered less important, especially when economy comes at play. Our website – Wrestling.pt – readers are mostly from Portugal and Brazil, two countries that are under strict budget cuts, and of course culture and arts are the first areas to suffer. To you as an artist, do you think art in general can have an impact on the economy or art’s value can’t be measured/guided by it’s economical value? I’m also asking this, knowing your work has been supported, for example, by fund raising social platforms like kickstarter. So can art be guided by the profitable? I don’t know if i was clear enough…

O balanço de arte e comércio é difícil de alcançar, e é realmente dificil de gerir por vezes. Num sentido mais alargado, a arte tem um lugar em qualquer lado, em qualquer tempo, independentemente da situação económica. A arte não é só um quadro, é também a música, teatro, uma boa referição, é a televisão e os filmes…realmente, a arte é tudo o que não está diretamente ligado com a sobrevivência e a reprodução. Comer simplesmente por sustento é sobreviver, comer uma refeição preparada por um chef é arte. Deste forma, por vezes a arte emerge de sitios inesperados. Como em Nova Iorque nos anos 70 e 80, em que a cidade estava inundada de crime e pobreza, mas dai emergiu o punk rock, o rap e o hip-hop, a arte de rua, Jean-Michel Basquiat e tantos outros movimentos artisticos que mudaram a forma de vermos o mundo.
The balance of art and commerce is a tough one, and it’s really hard to manage at times. In the broader sense, art has a place anywhere and at any time, regardless of economic situations. Art isn’t just a painting, it’s also music, it’s theater, it’s a good meal, it’s TV and movies…really, art is anything that is not directly related to survival or reproduction. Eating solely for sustenance is survival, eating a meal prepared by a chef is art. So with that, sometimes art emerges out of places one would not expect. Like New York in the late 70’s and early 80’s was overrun with crime and poverty, but out of that emerged punk rock, rap and hip-hop, street art, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and so many other creative outlets that changed the way we experience the world. Por exemplo, alguns dos meus artistas preferidos hoje são Brasileiros como o Gabriel Ba, Fabio Moon, Zeh Palito, Rodrigo Branco e claro, Os Gemeos. Todos eles estão a causar um enorme impacto por esse mundo fora.

Pode viver-se da arte?
Can you make a living out of art?

Eu tenho todo o meu rendimento a vir da arte nos últimos quatro anos e sim, pode ser feito. É verdade que é preciso muito trabalho para que tal aconteça e ainda mais trabalho para que continue a contecer, mas sim é uma meta realista.
I’ve made my full-time income from art for the last four years, so yes, it can be done. It takes a lot of work to make it happen, and then even more work to keep it happening, but yes, it’s a realistic goal.

Quando e como decidiste fazer do wrestling o tema do teu trabalho?
When and how did you decide to bring wrestling as subject of your art?

Há cinco anos atrás. Eu estava a ter um sucesso moderado com algumas mostras em galerias, mas estava a ser difícil distinguir o meu trabalho daquilo que já está a ser feito. Depois eu percebi que não há nenhum artista especializado em pinta pro wrestlers e rapidamente comecei a partir dai. Como fã de wrestling e fã de arte, sabia que queria fazer algo assim e percebi que haviam outros que também o queriam.
About five years ago. I was getting moderate success with gallery showings, but found it hard to stand out from the other work being done. Then I realized that no fine artist had ever specialized in portraits of pro wrestlers, and it took off quickly from there. As a fan of wrestling, and a fan of art, I knew that I personally wanted something like this, and figured correctly that others would, too!

Quanto tempo demora a ter um trabalho completo, desde a ideia até à sua conclusão?
How long does it take to get from an idea to finishing a painting?

Varia de trabalho para trabalho, dependendo do suporte, da complexidade da pintura e do tamanho. Às vezes uma hora, outras vezes um mês! Eu trabalho no quadro até considerar que está pronto, e não há forma de saber isso até realmente acontecer.
It varies from piece to piece, based on the medium, complexity of the painting, and size. Sometimes an hour, sometimes over a month! I just work at it until it feels like it’s done, and there’s no real way to know when that will be until it happens.

Podes dar-me uma ideia do teu historial no wrestling, quando começaste a ver e quais as tuas memórias mais importantes?
Can you give us and idea on your wrestling background, when did you start watching, what are your most important memories?

Bem, eu comecei a ver quando tinha 18 anos de idade. Estava na casa dos meus pais a lavar a roupa e o meu padrasto estava a mudar de canal, quando parou no WCW Monday Nitro com o Ric Flair no ringue a fazer uma promo. Devia ser em 1998 ou 1999 e eu fiquei preso. Na semana seguinte comecei a ver o WWF Monday Night Raw e desde ai sou um fã!
I started watching when I was 18 years old. I was at my parents’ house doing laundry, and my step-father was flipping through the channels and landed on WCW Monday Nitro with Ric Flair in the ring cutting a promo. This would have been 1998 or 1999, and I was instantly hooked. The next week I started watching WWF Monday Night Raw, and have been a regular fan since!

Actualmente, que promoções de wrestling acompanhas e quais são os teu talentos favoritos?
Currently, what wrestling products do you follow and what are you favorite talents?

Eu tento estar a par de tudo. Eu vejo o Raw com mais regularidade, mas simplesmente adoro wrestling. TNA, Ring of Honor, Lucha Underground, NXT, e claro que vejo promoções independentes por onde viajo. A promoção Metro Pro Wrestling, de Kansas City é muito divertida e tento não perder nenhum show. Tenho enorme respeito por qualquer homem ou mulher que calças as botas e passa aquelas cordas para dar-nps um show!
I try to stay up on everything. I watch Raw the most regularly, but I plainly love all wrestling. TNA, Ring of Honor, Lucha Underground, NXT, and of course independent wrestling everywhere I go. Kansas City’s local promotion, Metro Pro Wrestling, is a ton of fun and I try to make it to every show. I have so much respect for any man or woman who laces up their boots and steps through those ropes to put on a show for us!

Sobre o teu trabalho com a WWE, como é que aconteceu? Podes dar-nos uma ideia do que já fizeste para eles?
On your work with WWE, how did that happen? Can you give us an idea of the work you already made for them?

Há cerca de dois anos, o SmackDown veio a Kansas City e eu montei uma pequena mostra para ajudar a fundação Make-A-Wish. Eu tinha-me tornado amigo do Jim Ross há cerca de dois anos antes e falei com ele sobre a possibilidade de ele passar a informação para a WWE sobre esse evento. Ele fez esse favoe e tivemos muito sucesso, mas também decidimos avançar um pouco mais e falámos com os executivos da organização sobre a possibilidade de trabalharem comigo. Tem sido fantástico desde então!
About two years ago SmackDown was coming through Kansas City and I put together a gallery show to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I had become friendly with Jim Ross over the couple years before that and reached out to him to see if he could pass my information along to WWE to get the word out about the show. He did, and we had a great success, but he also went the extra distance and reached out to the executives in the company about directly working with me. It’s gone great since then!

De todos os teus trabalhos, sei que criaste toda a arte de um casaco para o Ultimate Warrior. Como é que isso aconteceu?
Among all your work, you have created the artwork for the Ultimate Warrior jacket, how did that happen?

Sem eu saber, o Warrior era meu fã e assistia aos meus videos no youtube, já me seguia há anos. Quando chegou o tempo de ele ter o seu regresso dramático à WWE, ele procurou-me para saber se eu estaria interessado em fazer algo para ele. Eu disse que sim, claro! Falámos ao telefone e ele foi fantástico de se trabalhar. Quando ele faleceu, tornou-se uma honra ainda maior para mim ter tido a oportunidade. Antes da Wrestlemania este ano, eu fiz um retrato de familia dele com a mulher e as filhas como um presente, e sei que elas o penduraram na sua sala de jantar.
Unbeknownst to me, Warrior was a fan of my work and had been watching my YouTube videos and following me for a few years. When it came time for his dramatic return to WWE, he reached out to me to see if I would be interested in doing it for him. Of course I said yes! We talked quite a bit on the phone, and he was awesome to work with. With his untimely passing, it’s become an even bigger honor for me to have done it. Before WrestleMania this year, I did a family portrait of him with his wife and daughters as a gift, and they have it hanging now in their dining room.

Fizeste alguns trabalho que eu consigo referenciar ao tempo da WCW (por exemplo). Lembro-me de quadros do DDP, do Sting e do Eddie Guerrero, entre outros. Trabalhas exclusivamente com a WWE ou também fazes trabalhos para outras organizações e talentos fora da WWE?
You’ve done some work that we can reference back to WCW (for example). I remember paintings from DDP, Sting and Eddie Guerrero. Do you work exclusively with WWE or do you also do work with other organizations and with talents that aren’t in the WWE?

Eu não sou exclusivo, mas eles mantém-me tão ocupado que não tenho tempo para muito mais! Eu tenho um projecto que estou constantemente a trabalhar chamado “The Champions Collection” em que pinto todos os campeões mundiais de todas as maiores promoções Americanas de wrestling, desde o tempo do Georg Hackenschmidt em 1905! Isso inclui a WCW, ECW, TNA, Ring of Honor, e a NWA, por isso celebro-os a todos também.
I’m not exclusive, but they keep me so busy that I don’t get much time to do anything else! I do have a project that I’m always working on called ‘The Champions Collection’ where I’m painting every World Champion from every major American promotion going all the way back to Georg Hackenschmidt in 1905! That includes WCW, ECW, TNA, Ring of Honor, and the NWA, so that allows me to celebrate all of them, too.

Imagino que cada quadro seja como um filho, mas tens um favorito? Há algum que seja recordado pelos fãs ou algum em particular que tenha causado maior impacto nos fãs de wrestling?
I imagine every single painting is like a child, but do you have a favorite? Do fans often recall a particular work of yours, is there one that created more impact among the wrestling fans?

Para o WWE Hall of Fame deste ano, surpreendi o pai Steve do Connor ‘The Crusher’ Michaelek com um quadro do Connor e do Ultimate Warrior juntos e penso que essa é a minha melhor e mais importante obra. Também é a mais popular. Gosto também do quadro ’30 Years of WrestleMania’ que fiz para a WrestleMania XXX o ano passado. Tinha 7′ x 5′ (cerca de 2 metros por 2 metros e meio) e levou-me um mês a pintar.
For this year’s WWE Hall of Fame, I surprised Connor ‘The Crusher’ Michaelek’s father Steve with a painting of Connor and the Ultimate Warrior together, and I think that is my best and most important piece. It’s also proven to be the most popular. I’m also particularly fond of the ‘30 Years of WrestleMania’ painting I did at WrestleMania XXX last year. It was 7’ x 5’ and ended up taking over a month to paint.

Os wrestlers pedem-te trabalhos específicos? Tens algum feedback deles sobre o teu trabalho?
Do wrestlers reach out to you to ask for your work? Do you get feedback from them?

Eu falo com eles com frequência e muitos deles penduram a minha arte nas suas casas. Por exemplo, a Natalya e o Tyson Kidd tem alguns quadros meus e mostraram-nos no Total Divas algumas vezes. Eu estou nos bastidores de eventos com muita frequência e falo com toda a gente quando lá estou.
I talk to them often and lots of them have my art hanging up in their homes! For instance, Natalya and Tyson Kidd have a few paintings, and they have shown up on Total Divas a couple times. I’m backstage at events fairly regularly and get to talk with everyone when I’m there.

Imagino que conheças muitos dos talentos, e quem são aqueles que mais te surpreenderam pela sua personalidade na vida real? De uma forma simples, quem são os tipos porreiros?
I image you get to know a lot of wrestlers, who are those that you were most surprised by their personality in real life? To put it in a simply way, who are the cool guys backstage?

Eu sei que é uma resposta fácil, mas toda a gente tem sido incrivel e tem apoiado bastante o meu trabalho. Alguns interessam-se muito mais que outros, e alguns tornaram-me amigos mais próximos que outros, mas universalmente tem sido um prazer trabalhar com todos eles.
I know it’s an easy answer, but really everyone has been awesome to me and super supportive. Some get way more into it than others, and some I’ve become better friends with than others, but universally everyone has been a delight to work with.

Há wrestlers que de alguma forma também abraçaram a arte, com exemplos na música (Chris Jericho), na pintura (Jeff Hardy) e nos desenhos (Sam Shaw). Como é que a arte pode ser uma mais-valia para a indústria do wrestling?
There are a few wrestlers that also embrace art, for example in music (Chris Jericho), and also on painting (Jeff Hardy) and drawing (Sam Shaw). How do you think art can be an asset to the business?

Eu sei da minha experiência pessoal que eu consigo capturar, não só a aparência do wrestler, mas como ele se sente quando está no ringue. Consigo captar essa essência de como se sente como um fã a vê-los. Isso é importante. Mais, com algo como o The Champions Collection, estou a tornar eternos atletas do passado que talvez tenham sido esquecidos pelos fãs hoje. Isso é importante.
I know from my own personal approach, that I can capture not just the wrestler’s appearance, but how it feels to watch them perform, to capture the essence of what it feels like to be a fan watching them. That’s important. Plus, with something like The Champions Collection, I’m memorializing athletes from the past that may be forgotten by today’s fans. That’s also important.

Há um nivel de colaboração com a WWE que gostavas de atingir, por exemplo, ao teres o teu trabalho fortemente presente num PPV ou desenhando o fato de algum wrestler?
Is there a level of collaboration with the WWE you would like to achieve, for example, having your work heavily represented in a PPV artwork? designing a wrestlers gear?

Qualquer oportunidade que surja estou disposto a aceitar. Claro que o meu trabalho já esteve muitas vezes na televisão, mas tudo se resume ao momento certo.
As any opportunity comes up, I’m always excited to embrace it. Of course I’d like for my work to be seen on TV more, but that all comes with time and when the moment is right.

Quais os teus projectos futuros?
What are the next projects you will be working on?

Agora estou a trabalhar em muitos quadros para o National Wrestling Hall of Fame museum em Waterloo, IA, onde me concederam a minha própria área. É uma honra enorme e eu sou um apoiante daquela organização. Eu também vou pintar ao vivo e estar presente em muitas convenções da Wizard World nos EUA e também em eventos da WWE. Espero muito em breve fazer algumas aparições na Europa também!
Right now I’m working on a lot of paintings for the National Wrestling Hall of Fame museum in Waterloo, IA, who are giving me my own area. That’s a huge honor, and I’m a big proponent of that organization. I’ll also be painting live and appearing at several upcoming Wizard World conventions around the country, as well as WWE events. I really, really hope to make some European appearances sooner than later, too!
